DELIVERY SCHOOL: TUMBY BAY AREA SCHOOL

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION FOR STAGE 2 :

Stage 2 Chemistry builds on the principles and concepts of chemistry introduced in Stage 1 Chemistry.

In their study of Chemistry, students develop and extend their understanding of how the physical world is chemically constructed, the interaction between human activities and the environment, and the use that human beings make of the planet's resources. 

They explore examples of how scientific understanding is dynamic and develops with new evidence, which may involve the application of new technologies.

The topics for Stage 2 Chemistry are:

Organic and Biological Chemistry

TOPIC 4

ASSESSMENT

The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 2 Chemistry:
School Assessment (70%)

  • Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio (30%)

  • Assessment Type 2: Skills & Applications Tasks (40%)

External Assessment (30%)

  • Assessment Type 3: Examination (30%).

Students provide evidence of their learning through six or seven assessments, including the external assessment component. Students complete:
•    one or two practical investigations
•    one investigation with a focus on science as a human endeavour 
•    three or four skills and applications tasks 
•    one examination.
At least one investigation or skills and applications task should involve collaborative work.

LOCAL DELIVERY

Period of delivery  | Full Year (20 units)

Delivery Method:   

  • At least two weekly video conferences using Microsoft Teams

  • At least four 100 minute visits per year to complete practicals and revision.

  • Flipped Learning delivered via Microsoft Teams

  • Text/workbook will be supplied by teacher.

 

Intervention Support  

  • If an assessment task does not meet the minimum C- level, or if a student does not meet a deadline, the teacher will communicate with the home school contact and/or parents/caregivers to negotiate support strategies.

 

Reporting

  • Students can monitor continuous progress through Microsoft Teams.

  • Reports will be provided in line with delivery school processes and timelines.

Prerequisites/ Assumed knowledge

  • Full year of Stage 1 Chemistry at C or better.

 

Technical requirements 

  • Laptop with working camera and Microsoft Teams installed.

  • Microphone/headphones.

  • A scientific or graphics calculator.

  • Electronic drawing device (touchscreen with pen or Wacom tablet) – limited supply of Wacom tablets available for loan if needed.

LOCAL DELIVERY

Eyre Peninsula schools with senior secondary enrolments have made a commitment to offer subjects including SACE and VET to students from other sites across the Eyre Peninsula. This is referred to as Local Delivery. Local Delivery provides students in all schools across the Eyre Peninsula access to a wider range of subjects than what is physically available at their own school.
