BIOLOGY

DELIVERY SCHOOL: CUMMINS AREA SCHOOL

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION FOR STAGE 2 :

The study of Biology is constructed around inquiry into and application of understanding the diversity of life as it has evolved, the structure and function of living things, and how they interact with their own and other species and their environments.

The topics for Stage 2 Biology are:

Cells as the Basis of Life

TOPIC 3

Homeostasis

TOPIC 4

Evolution

ASSESSMENT

The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 2 Biology:


School Assessment (70%)

  • Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio (30%)

  • Assessment Type 2: Skills & Applications Tasks (40%)

External Assessment (30%)

  • Assessment Type 3: Examination (30%).

  • Students provide evidence of their learning through eight assessments, including the 
    external assessment component

Students complete:

  • one or two practical investigations

  • one investigation with a focus on science as a human endeavour 

  • three or four skills and applications tasks

  • one electronic examination.

At least one investigation or skills and applications task should involve collaborative work.​

LOCAL DELIVERY

Period of delivery  | Full Year (20 units)

Intended Delivery Method:   

  • At least two weekly video conferences using Microsoft Teams

  • At least four 100 minute visits per year to complete practicals and revision

  • Flipped Learning delivered via Microsoft Teams

  • Text/workbook will be supplied by teacher.

 

Intervention Support

  • Continuous assessment will be available through Teams

  • If an assessment task does not meet the minimum C- level, or a draft is not submitted by draft deadline, the teacher will communicate with the parents/caregivers and home school contact to negotiate support strategies.

 

Reporting

  • Students can monitor continuous progress through Microsoft Teams.

  • Reports will be provided in line with delivery school processes and timelines.

 

Prerequisites

  • Full year of Stage 1 Biology at C or better highly recommended.

​

Technical requirements 

  • Laptop with working camera and Microsoft Teams installed.

  • Microphone/headphones.

  • A scientific or graphics calculator.

  • Electronic drawing device (touchscreen with pen or Wacom tablet) – limited supply of Wacom tablets available for loan if needed.

  • Deadline and Plagiarism policies in line with SACE Expectations.

LOCAL DELIVERY

Eyre Peninsula schools with senior secondary enrolments have made a commitment to offer subjects including SACE and VET to students from other sites across the Eyre Peninsula. This is referred to as Local Delivery. Local Delivery provides students in all schools across the Eyre Peninsula access to a wider range of subjects than what is physically available at their own school.
