BIOLOGY

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION FOR STAGE 1:
The study of Biology is constructed around inquiry into and application of understanding the diversity of life as it has evolved, the structure and function of living things, and how they interact with their own and other species and their environments.
The topics for Stage 1 Biology are:

ASSESSMENT
The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 1 Biology:
School Assessment (70%)

Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio
-
Assessment Type 2: Skills and Applications Tasks.
For a 10-credit subject, students provide evidence of their learning through three or four assessments.
Each assessment type should have a weighting of at least 20%.
Students complete:

at least one practical investigation
-
one investigation with a focus on science as a human endeavour
-
at least one skills and applications task.
LOCAL DELIVERY
Period of delivery | Semester 1 and Semester 2 (2 x 10 units)
Delivery Method:

At least two weekly video conferences using Microsoft Teams
-
At least four 100 minute visits per year to complete practicals and revision

Flipped Learning delivered via Microsoft Teams

Text/workbook will be supplied by teacher.
Intervention Support

Continuous assessment will be available through Teams

If an assessment task does not meet the minimum C- level, or a draft is not submitted by draft deadline, the teacher will communicate with the parents/caregivers and home school contact to negotiate support strategies.
Reporting

Students can monitor continuous progress through Microsoft Teams.

Reports will be provided in line with delivery school processes and timelines.
Prerequisites

It is recommended that the student has achieved a C or better in Year 10 Science
Technical requirements

Laptop with working camera and Microsoft Teams installed.

Microphone/headphones.

A scientific or graphics calculator.

Electronic drawing device (touchscreen with pen or Wacom tablet) – limited supply of Wacom tablets available for loan if needed.

LOCAL DELIVERY
Eyre Peninsula schools with senior secondary enrolments have made a commitment to offer subjects including SACE and VET to students from other sites across the Eyre Peninsula. This is referred to as Local Delivery. Local Delivery provides students in all schools across the Eyre Peninsula access to a wider range of subjects than what is physically available at their own school.
